Mihretu Dessalegne
When it came to culture, I never quite found myself in a specific group. As a child, I went to church in an urban area, and went to school with students living a suburban lifestyle. I adapted wherever I went, and I found myself getting to know a lot of different people who thought in different ways. And in all of this, I realized that there was a deeper similarity in our humanity than there were differences marked from culture. As I continued to grow into adulthood, it became easier for me to see into the humanity of a person – particularly in the struggles that person was facing. It fostered empathy in me, and is a reason I chose the counseling profession.
